At the start of our monthly board meetings, we always have a safety moment. During this time, we make a point of reflecting on the safety of all those who work at or visit the yard.

This month, we reflected on what caused the Giant Piper Alpha Oil Rig explosion on 6 July 1988. This disaster has much to teach us about early warning signs and missed opportunities to prevent tragedy and cases of serious incident.

Our safety culture at Harland & Wolff finds focus in prioritising personal safety over process, ensuring adequate transfer of information as change in personnel occurs and avoiding complacency through the “it will do, everything will be fine” mindset.

Our team is empowered to be individually responsible for preventing safety breaches and actively encouraged to report any concerns, no matter how small or large.
