On Sunday 23rd April 2023, two of our members of staff, Joanne Milne and James Bateman represented Harland & Wolff at the London Marathon on behalf of our 2023 partner charity The Seafarers Charity.

In the weeks leading up to the race, our runners participated in a comprehensive training programme, which equipped them with the necessary skills to successfully complete the marathon. The training typically consisted of base mileage training which required them to build upon their weekly mileage over time. They also engaged in long runs on a weekly basis to adjust their bodies to long distances, and speed work which allowed them to practice intervals and tempo runs to increase their cardio capacity. On average, our runners participated in around 30-40 miles of training per week, leading up to the race.

After weeks of training, Joanne, and James each completed the marathon within very impressive amounts of time. James was able to finish with a time of 3 hours, 36 minutes and 36 seconds, and Joanne also finished in 4 hours, 31 minutes, and 55 seconds.

Joanne Milne, Group Payroll Manager at Harland & Wolff (Belfast) added ‘’Running the London marathon last weekend was an amazing experience. The training leading up to the marathon was hard work and took up a lot of time and energy but crossing that finish line made it all worthwhile.’’

‘’I’m so thankful to have been part of such a great event.  For anyone that’s ever thought of running a marathon I thoroughly recommend it – one for the bucket list!’’

James Bateman, Project Controls Manager at Harland & Wolff (Appledore), mentioned ‘’I would say the London Marathon is an amazing experience and would recommend it to anyone wanting to complete such a race.’’

‘’The race is very well organised and run with assistance available at all points of the race including the preparation before and after the race.’’

‘’I am particularly grateful for all the support from the Seafarers Charity, as well as Harland &Wolff because without them this experience would not have been possible.’’

About The Seafarers Charity

The Seafarers Charity is an organisation that aims to improve the quality of life of seafarers and their families both at sea and at home. Their vision is to create a world in which seafarers and their families are valued and free of need and disadvantage. Their efforts to actualise this vision can be seen through their grant awarding initiative, through which they supply funding to maritime charities to empower them to carry out their own mission.
