Belfast based Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd has successfully completed the refurbishment of the SeaRose FPSO (floating production, storage and offloading vessel).

Owned and operated by Canada-based Husky Energy, the SeaRose FPSO, which measures 272m by 46m, has been docked in Harland and Wolff’s Belfast Repair Dry Dock since its arrival on the 6th of June.

Work on the SeaRose has included maintenance on the vessel’s propulsion system, turret and painting of the hull as well as regulatory inspections and upgrades to accommodate present and future operating capacity.

Since contract award in January, Harland and Wolff have worked closely with the customer, planning in detail the scope of work as well as providing support and facilities on site. This collaborative approach has worked very successfully, ensuring early execution of the project schedule.

With high specification facilities including two of the largest dry docks in Europe, H&W provide a competitive alternative to shipyards on the continent.

Shortly after the contract was awarded, Husky started to integrate its project team with staff at Harland and Wolff,” said Ken Dyer, Husky Energy’s Vice President, Operations for the Atlantic Region. “This early interaction provided for a smooth time in dry dock and allowed us to carry out our work scopes on target and with zero lost time incidents.”

Harland and Wolff Project Manager James Lappin said, ‘We are delighted that SeaRose left for offshore Newfoundland ahead of schedule. I’d like to thank Husky for their open and professional approach over the last 6 months. I’d also like to thank over 1,000 personnel, whether they be H&W, Husky or subcontractors, who worked on SeaRose for their dedication to the project and commitment to the safety of all involved.’

The SeaRose has been a hugely significant project for Harland and Wolff as it raises the company’s profile further within the offshore oil and gas marketplace. Mr Lappin continued, ‘We have proven that we are not only capable of large offshore design and build projects, but that we’re also a competent and competitive alternative for the docking and upgrade of offshore oil and gas units.’ He concluded, ‘Our Repair and Conversion department continues to invest, expand and develop our capability, in line with our customer requirements; we invite other oil and gas companies to make contact and see what we can do for them.’

‘We are proud Husky Energy placed their trust in us,” H&W Chief Executive Officer Robert J Cooper said. “All levels of H&W were committed to ensuring this important project was completed safely and successfully.’
