Suvarna reaches new heights at shipyard

Sunday 21 December 2008

One of the more unusual dockings at Belfast’s Harland and Wolff repair yard has been completed successfully. The Suvarna, a highly manoeuvrable vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry to anchor drill rigs in position, was docked for four days. The docking was unusual because the vessel was posed on double-stacked blocks, four metres high, to allow the removal of a bow thruster, an engine used to manoeuvre the ship.
David McVeigh, Harland and Wolff heavy Industries sales and marketing manager says few shipyards in the UK can provide this service.
“Harland and Wolff is one of very few shipyards which can provide 12 metres water depth and block height to allow this,” he says. “Our competitivity relies on our facilities and we were particularly pleased to secure this project as it amply illustrates just how flexible we can be.” Ends
