Harland and Wolff certified to CE mark fabricated structures with award of EN 1090-2 EXC3

Tuesday 01 July 2014

Harland and Wolff are delighted to announce certification which will allow CE marking of its fabricated structural steelwork.   As of 1st July 2014 it is a mandatory requirement within the European Union that steelwork fabricators are in compliance with ISO EN 1090.

This is an important certification for Harland and Wolff’s Factory Production Control System and compliments their existing certified management systems for Quality, Welding, Health and Safety and Environmental Protection.   The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) requires structural steel and aluminium products to be CE marked to improve free trade across Europe.   EN 1090 is a harmonised supporting standard that sets the requirements for conformity assessment of steel and aluminium structural components.

Although some aspects of Heavy Structural Fabrication and Offshore Structures are not specifically covered by the Construction Products Regulation since they have their own regulations and specification, it is becoming an increasingly requested compliance since it offers an additional level of quality assurance to the Client.   Therefore, since Harland and Wolff is a specialised structural steel fabricator serving offshore industries it is understandable that it should choose to achieve compliance.

The Company has been awarded EN 1090-2 Execution Class 3 EXC3 which covers the complete range of high-grade steel material types and welding technologies currently employed in the construction of offshore skids, modules, topsides and subsea jacket structures.   However, the award is an absolute necessity for onshore civil structures such as bridges, link-spans and other steel structures that are fabricated by Harland and Wolff.

The Factory Production Control System has been under development for some time, so it is satisfying that the hard efforts have been recognised by an external compliance audit.

Harland and Wolff are passionately committed to developing its quality improvement programmes and look forward to further accolades in the years to come.
